Andrew Page, How to Teach the Bible so that People Meet God

Afgelopen zomer dit boekske gelezen. Het is eenvoudig, helder, compact en aansprekend. (Alleen een beetje voor 63 pagina's paperback.) 

Ik werd erdoor aangesproken vanwege de verbinding tussen Bijbelonderwijs en de levensveranderende genade van God. Als er ook maar iets is dat het leven van mensen kan veranderen, dan is dat het Woord van God. Als je onderwijs uit de Bijbel geeft, dan is er dus een grote kans dat mensen worden aangesproken, en dat ze een ontmoeting met God hebben. 

Echter, dat is geen vanzelfsprekend gebeuren, waarbij je rustig met je armen over elkaar kunt gaan zitten en laconiek denken: 't zal wel goed komen. Hieronder een aantal citaten met tips van Andrew Page hoe dan wel. 

Voorbereiding als worship!

"What I can do is encourage you to do all your preparation and all your teaching as worship to God. Open yourself up to the Holy Spirit: allow him to use truth to touch you and move you.

If your preparation is just academic, your teaching will be just academic too. But if you are meeting God as you prepare, that will come through in your teaching." (p.46)

Wow! Dus we mogen alles wat we ontdekken, wat ons in de schoot geworpen worden als studenten van de Bijbel, teruggeven aan God in aanbidding!

Wie zelf God ontmoet, wil graag dat anderen ook God ontmoeten

"Bible teaching is not only about information. It is about encounter. If you have ever had the experience of knowing that God was speaking to you through the Bible, then you long for others to hear God too." (p.59)

Jazeker, dat is waar ik naar verlang. Pass it on. 

Twee dingen tegelijk: luisteren/spreken en bidden

"Now of course I cannot create an encounter with God. But what I can do – with the Spirit’s help – is play my part in creating a situation in which it is more likely that people will meet God.

And a key part of that is encouraging people to pray, and to keep praying, as they hear the word of God.

As a Bible teacher I try to do two things at once too. At the same time as I speak the word of God I want to be able to be asking God to speak into the hearts of my listeners. So that they know they are meeting God." (p.60)

Dat vind ik nou evenwichtig. Je kunt het zelf niet bewerkstelligen, je bent maar mens. Maar je kunt er wel om bidden, je ervoor openstellen. En ook je hoorders kunnen dat.

Een bovennatuurlijke gebeurtenis

"I called this book How to Teach the Bible so that People Meet God – and that is an astonishing thing to aim at.

We cannot create an encounter with God. Only the Holy Spirit can do that.

But if what he uses more than anything to change people’s lives is the Bible, Bible teachers have an amazing privilege. As they teach God’s word the Holy Spirit may choose to make this a supernatural event." (p.62)

Een geweldig voorrecht om Bijbelleraar te mogen zijn! Als God het gebruikt, dan verandert er iets, sterker nog: personen veranderen.
